PHILADELPHIA UNION VERSUS THE COLUMBUS CREW

 

UNION WIN FIRST GAME OF THE SEASON 1-0

Well the Union were still looking for their first win of the season going into their fifth game of the season. Last game they locked into a 0-0 defensive home tie against Vancouver.

Injuries: Roger Torres will be out for 6 to 8 weeks with a torn MCL, Krystian Witkowski out with a concussion and Danny Califf out with hamstring strain.

 

Union starting line-up: Goalkeeper, Zac MacMath, defenders, Sheanon Williams, Raymond Gaddis, Carlos Valdes, Gabriel Farfan, midfielders, Brian Carroll, Keon Daniel,  Gabriel Gomez, Michael Farfan, forwards, Freddy Adu and Lionard Pajoy.

 

Columbus starting line-up: Goalkeeper, Andy Gruenbaum, defenders, Sebastien Miranda, Chad Marshall, Eric Gehrig, Shaun Francis, midfielders, Kirk Urso, Milovan Mirosevic, Eddie Gavin, Ethan Finlay, forwards, Olman Vargas and Aaron Schoenfeld.

 

First Half Highlights:

1:57 in Gabriel Farfan goes down in the box with an injury with #13. Both go off.  4:25 Columbus right side corner; Kirk Urso taking; cleared out over left touch line by Union. 6:26 Union left side corner taken by Freddy Adu; eventual right wing cross to Adu called for off-sides.

 

Pajoy chance at 9:00 but chest trap to heavy and Columbus goalkeeper Andy Gruenbaum covers. Union free kick at 10:15 played short. Brian Carroll shoots wide left off the clearance from 25 yards out at

11:30. Union right side corner at 15:53 taken by Adu; cross caught by keeper.

 

Another right side Union corner at 17:34; Adu taking; played short and lost possession.  Columbus direct free kick left side from corner of 18 at 21:16. Shot blocked for left side corner at 22:06; cleared out.  25:01 Gabriel Gomez for kicking ball away after Columbus given free kick from 40 yards out; kick headed wide for goal kick.

 

Freddy Adu’s right wing cross at 30:18 results in a corner after Eric Greg almost kicked ball into his own net.  Olman Vargas right wing cross goes wide at 34:05 for goal kick.  Penalty kick awarded at 36:56 after Gehrig  handles a right wing Freddy Adu cross in the box.  Gabriel Gomez scores on the kick to give the Union the 1-0 lead.

 

Carlos Valdes clears headed from the six yard box at 41:30. Three minutes of stoppage time added.  Left side corner Columbus at 43:39; cleared out for Union goal kick. Columbus free kick wide right 35 yards out, Kirk Urso takes, Carlos Valdes clears ball from inside the six.

 

Yellow card in extra time on Brian Carroll for foul on Olman Vargas 42 yards out in middle of defensive half.

UNION MAKE MAJOR CHANGES IN THE OFF SEASON.

The Union made some major changes in the off season with the main one trading Sebastien LeToux to Vancouver and releasing goalkeeper Faryd Mondragon. In other moves they signed Greg Jordan, Raymon Gaddis plus supplemental picks Krystian Witkowski, Antoine Hoppennot and goalkeeper Chase Harrison.

In other transactions they signed goalkeeper Chris Konopka from Toms River, New Jersey and Cristhian Hernandez as a home grown player.
